As part of our mission to deliver trusted, compliant, and modern cloud infrastructure, Cleura is proud to introduce our newly established Cloud Services R&D division. This is a strategic move to strengthen our open source commitment, deepen our role within the OpenInfra community, and accelerate the development of end-to-end cloud services for our customers.
This newly formed division will not only serve as the engine room for evolving our OpenStack platform, but also take responsibility for building the actual services that customers consume — from infrastructure-level APIs to developer-ready platforms and tooling.
Why Cloud Services R&D?
The cloud ecosystem continues to evolve rapidly, and Cleura is evolving with it. By launching a focused R&D division, we are:
- Investing in the core of our platform: Evolving the technical foundation of Cleura’s OpenStack-based infrastructure through structured, upstream-driven development.
- Building complete cloud services: Delivering consumable services like GPU-as-a-Service, Backup-as-a-Service, Database-as-a-Service, and more — all grounded in secure, sovereign infrastructure.
- Accelerating innovation: Creating faster feedback loops between architectural planning, technical implementation, and real-world consumption.
- Bridging OpenStack and enterprise needs: Closing feature gaps and integrating capabilities customers expect from modern, hybrid-ready cloud platforms.
OpenStack-first, open Source by default
Cleura remains committed to OpenStack as our core platform and Open Source by Default as our guiding principle. The Cloud Services R&D division will actively invest in maturing relevant OpenStack projects and contribute upstream, while remaining pragmatic in how we adopt technologies. This includes considering commercial solutions where maturity or compliance demands it, but always with a long-term open source vision.
We’re also positioning ourselves to be a more visible and engaged member of the OpenInfra Foundation by increasing our efforts to participate in events, contribute code, and attract world-class talent who want to shape the future of open infrastructure.
Building beyond the platform
While OpenStack is our foundation, Cloud Services R&D is not limited to infrastructure alone.
This new organization will also develop services higher up the stack, including:
- Application and Developer platforms
- AI and Data services
- Container orchestration and CI/CD tooling
- Observability, security, and identity services
- User-facing control panels and APIs
These capabilities are essential to meet modern customer needs and the R&D division is now directly responsible for delivering them in a coherent, scalable, and production-ready way.
What this means for the future

“This change represents more than an internal reorganization. It’s a declaration of intent”.
Daniel Nolte
“We are aligning our technical strategy, product development, and open source values under one roof — giving our teams the mandate, clarity, and leadership needed to deliver not just cloud components, but true cloud capabilities.
The result? Faster delivery. Clearer roadmaps. Higher platform maturity. And more opportunities for Cleura to be a leading voice in the future of open source cloud.”
