Europe has recently been made acutely aware of the implications of the current digital landscape that we have created for ourselves. Generally speaking, there appears to be an increased understanding of the need for European digital sovereignty. That’s all well and good, but when you dig a little deeper, you even see demands for it, for instance through both Norway’s and Denmark’s clear-cut calls for “exit strategies” from U.S. clouds.
These are a fascinating turn of events, and we are thrilled to see increased interest in the topics that we have discussed and advocated for during the past decade.
This is highly noteworthy as we move to the topic of resilience, and our recent launch of availability zones in Cleura Compliant Cloud.
In today’s cloud-driven world, customers are placing ever more stringent requirements on their cloud providers, especially in Europe. Today our clients demand not only scalability, flexibility, top-tier performance and adherence to strict regulatory requirements, but also unwavering continuity.
What is Cleura Compliant Cloud?
Cleura Compliant Cloud is a robust European cloud platform designed for mission-critical data and applications. As such, it was purposefully built as a high-performance, pay-as-you-go IaaS based on open source software, while adding a range of controls and measures for enhanced cybersecurity and compliance.

Our new generation of Cleura Compliant Cloud now takes things to the next level regarding continuity. By re-designing our cloud infrastructure architecture from the ground up, and by implementing availability zones (AZ), we can now offer a robust, European IaaS, which guarantees digital sovereignty and meets our customers’ needs for exceptional levels of continuity.
What Are Availability Zones?
In a nutshell, availability zones consist of multiple, separate data centers, working together to present themselves as a single cloud region.
Behind the scenes, each availability zone is delivered out of an independently operated data center. Each data center is located in its own building, has its own power and network connections, and has its own auxiliary and backup systems. Despite this separation, availability zones work in tandem, as a trio, or as a quartet depending on how many of them make up a cloud region.
By using a cloud region consisting of multiple availability zones, workloads can be automatically distributed between multiple data centers to mitigate the risk of a single point of failure. In practice, if one availability zone encounters issues, the remaining zones can continue to operate, providing seamless continuity for applications and services.
Availability zones in Cleura Compliant Cloud
The new generation of Cleura Compliant Cloud appears to customers as one Stockholm based cloud region, while offering three availability zones. Our availability zones are interconnected by high-bandwidth, fully redundant, low-latency fiber networks which ensures that workloads can seamlessly shift between zones without compromising performance.

High availability is crucial when running mission-critical applications and Cleura Compliant Cloud can help organizations meet continuity and resiliency requirements under NIS2 and DORA.
What are the benefits of using availability zones?
Running applications across multiple availability zones enhances scalability, improves uptime for mission-critical workloads, and delivers uninterrupted services to end-users.
Incorporating availability zones into Cleura Compliant Cloud is more than just a technical upgrade – it’s a strategic advancement empowering our customers’ deployments with enhanced continuity, superior performance, and enhanced regulatory compliance.
Unmatched Availability, Continuity, and Performance
High Availability
Our infrastructure is engineered with rapid failover mechanisms which minimize downtime and ensure your applications remain accessible around the clock – even in the event of an unexpected failure.
Business Continuity
By distributing workloads across multiple, independent availability zones, our solution enables your critical processes to run seamlessly during unforeseen disruptions.
Optimized Performance
High-bandwidth, low-latency fiber networks between zones reduces latency and balances loads, ensuring your applications run at peak efficiency to deliver an exceptional user experience.
Why a European IaaS Provider Makes a Difference
In today’s regulatory landscape, meeting compliance requirements is as critical as ensuring operational resilience. Our new AZ framework is engineered with these challenges in mind.
Availability zones and NIS2 Alignment
The EU’s directive on the cybersecurity of network and information systems, NIS2, emphasizes the need for robust, resilient, and secure infrastructure. While the directive covers various aspects of cybersecurity, a key part is ensuring business continuity and the ability to recover from severe incidents.
By leveraging multiple availability zones, Cleura’s platform supports our customers in their work to meet continuity requirements under NIS2.
GDPR Integration in a european cloud
Cleura’s IaaS solution is built to help you meet stringent data protection requirements under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
When customers use our services, they are not dependent on a fragile adequacy decision, or standard contractual clauses which require tedious administrative work without making a real difference to data subjects.
At the same time, customers can benefit from a cloud with availability zones to ensure that critical applications and important personal data are accessible when they need to be, even if a data center faces disruptions.
European Digital Sovereignty
As a European cloud provider, we ensure that your data remains under the protection of EU laws and regulations. Unlike US-based cloud providers, Cleura is not subject to US extraterritorial surveillance legislation. Our commitment to European digital sovereignty provides you with robust data governance and full control over your digital assets, reinforcing trust and compliance in every deployment.
